EST Updates: Completely updated patient handout - Grab the new version here!

Hi Reader,

Help me decide how to organize multi-skill handouts for the print book! See "What I'm working on" for more details.

Today, I'm sharing a completely updated patient handout. Link is in the 'Featured EST post & handout' section below.

I've also been taking Hospice continuing education courses. One of the SLPs shared a treasure-trove of fact sheets. You can find links to several in the "Something worth sharing" section at the end of this email. I picked ones that apply across levels of care.

🧠What I'm working on

I'm off to a solid start making the spiral-bound handout book. I have 7 of 11 swallow-themed handouts completely ready.

This took me longer than expected, because I updated the content of four of the handouts, adding 3 completely new pages.

In the digital Resource Binder, I have a "Special Conditions" section with 23 handouts. Some of these cover more than one skill area (think "ALS" or "Bell's Palsy").

In the digital PDF, it doesn't matter if I include a handout in more than one section.

But in the print version, more pages = more cost.

I don't plan to duplicate handouts in the print books. (The handouts will probably be split into 2 books, since it's a lot of pages. I want people to be able to make copies easily.)

If I keep the special conditions as a separate section, I'm worried people won't think to look there. They may just go to the "swallowing" section if they're looking for swallow-related handouts.

Thoughts?

Early access to one of my updated handouts! If you're recommending pureed food for someone, you may like to give them this new 2-page handout.

The "Easy and delicious pureed vegetables" page is adapted from a chef teaching how to make restaurant-quality pureed veggies.

The "How to puree meat" page is comprehensive for pureeing cooked meat, with separate instructions for warm vs cold meat.

For comparison, here is the original handout. I made this handout over four years ago when I evaluated a patient who had been eating pudding and yogurt since coming home on a pureed food diet because they didn't know how to puree food.

I actually run into this issue a lot. While I have gone into the kitchen to teach hands-on how to puree food once or twice, usually I just provide detailed instruction. I also bought two dysphagia cookbooks that I show my patients (or their spouses).

Here is the original blog post. I haven't updated the handout on the blog post yet. You're getting early access!

Hi Reader,Today, I'm sharing a new patient handout that I created for someone I worked with recently. It's designed to help people take more control over memory lapses in conversation. I explain further in the Featured EST Post & Handout section. I hope this email finds you safe and well. If you come across something you think I should share in a future email, or if you're a creator and would like to recommend your own work, please hit reply and let me know! Hi Reader,I took a deep dive into what actually makes a SOAP note clear, defensible, and quick to write. It's been a labor of love (or desperation?), but it's ready! The free download is long, but it's easy to skim. I included guiding questions, verb banks, sentence starters, and examples. If you'd like to write your session notes faster or more succinctly, this guide just might help you! 🧠What I'm working on Almost all of my blog time was dedicated to the SOAP note guide, but I did figure...

Hi Reader,My company doesn't want us to say "patient tolerated" anymore. They want specificity. So I worked with Chat GPT to come up with a bunch of other ways to report how the patient did. I organized it by what we actually mean by "tolerated" since that term can cover a lot! You can find the link to the bonus handout below. 🧠What I'm working on I'm nearly finished with the SLP SOAP note guide. The draft version has really helped improve clarity in my own documentation, and the final...
