Hi Reader, I've updated the rewards for supporters on Buy Me a Coffee! If you're a supporting member, you should have received the updated PDF of handouts from my blog (now a whopping 360 pages!). Anyone leaving a one-time tip receives the Mini-Binder PDF as their 'thank you'. I updated this PDF with the low-vision font screener test. I'll let you in on a secret. If you want the full Resource Binder but don't want to sign up for the monthly or yearly 'tips', simply leave a tip for more than one coffee, then email me to request the PDF. It's not how I set up the rewards, but I do appreciate any support you're able to provide. One of the perks of doing things my way is that I get to break my own rules!

I've earned many continuing education credits by listening to informative courses as I drove from one patient's home to another.
This was a life-saver when I switched to home health and started seeing patient populations I'd never encountered before!

One treatment method I return to time and again is spaced retrieval with errorless learning.
It doesn't work for everyone with memory loss, but wow, when it works, it can dramatically improve quality of life.
For instance, I recently worked with an elderly woman with dementia who was driving her husband crazy by repeatedly asking what was happening that day.
After three sessions, she was going to check the calendar instead of asking the question!
And to top that, her husband had independently used the technique to train a problem I didn't even know existed. He trained her to wait for an escort before going up or down the stairs.
Just one of the many reasons I love home health!
Here are the three articles I wrote on this training technique:
And here are the related handouts:
I'm sharing Kerry's post to honor the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This is not a political newsletter, but I am proud to be an American, and I'm proud to have served in the United States Marine Corps. I served alongside people from every walk of life.
None of those differences were relevant. We were all "green", as the Corps likes to say.
In the same manner, I respect and honor each and every one of my patients, regardless of their beliefs or lifestyles. We are all living here in the community together.
I appreciate you taking the time to read my thoughts!

I've been a medical speech-language pathologist since 2008, and I'm passionate about sharing useful tips and resources to help people living with swallowing, communication, or cognitive challenges.
Hi Reader,I love when I come across a new swallow assessment resource that is practical and meaningful. In my new blog post, I share how SLPs can do an auditory-perceptual cough assessment, what to listen for, and how this can translate into clinical decision making. The new handout is a cheat sheet for SLPs, organized to make it easy to find relevant information at a glance. Feel free to share it with your colleagues! I recently learned about the SPEAK Project - a project that is taking real...
Hi Reader,I'm so excited to be sharing this patient success story! My patient "James" was barely talking when I met him, due to aphasia. I tried my usual therapy methods for the first month and didn't get far. Then I learned about a new aphasia treatment on the Speech Scope podcast and decided to try it, even though it seemed too easy. But it worked! James was telling long stories and cracking jokes by the 5th session! You can find the link to his story and learn about the therapy approach in...
Hi Reader,I'm a huge fan of Medbridge. In my opinion, the continuing education courses are top-notch, and the library of helpful materials continues to grow. See below for an exciting discount that ends June 30! My garden is larger than ever, and now I'm watching videos to learn how to can and pickle. Very exciting! 🧠What I'm working on I'm almost done with my new blog post, sharing the true story of how well ECoLoGiC-Tx worked for the first patient I tried it with. (This is a relatively new...
