EST Updates: New aphasia resource and Procrastinators Get Stuff Done!

Hi Reader,

Ever wonder what it might be like to have aphasia? Wish you had a resource to share with families? If so, check out the new handout and updated blog below. (Includes a new link to Spanish-language aphasia simulations among other updates!)

Normally, I stick to something close to speech pathology in my "Something worth sharing" section, but today I'm sharing my favorite decluttering expert. She is releasing a book on procrastination on Oct 6 which has already made a difference in my life! I talk more about this below.

🧠What I'm working on

My first spiral-bound book will have the updated handouts for the categories of "Eat", "Condition-specific handouts", and "Being an SLP."

When I was organizing the printed handouts in a binder, I discovered that I had overlooked around a dozen condition-specific handouts. So I'm not quite finished with updating the handouts for the first book!

I have 100 pages of handouts ready to go, with perhaps 10-20 more pages to add. That feels like a decent amount for a book.

Volume 2 will be the categories of "Speak" and "Think". I want to get Volume 1 printed first, to make sure the quality is good.

I'm nearing the finish line, which is super exciting!

I've earned many continuing education credits by listening to informative courses as I drove from one patient's home to another.

This was a life-saver when I switched to home health and started seeing patient populations I'd never encountered before!

12 ways to experience what aphasia is like. I updated this article with new information, a new video from a teen survivor, a link to a Spanish-language aphasia simulator, and refreshed the immersive activity suggestions.

The new Experience Aphasia handout is much more detailed, with all the key details on two pages. I think this might be useful for family and friends of people who have aphasia, as well as to raise awareness in general.

🌐 Something worth sharing

  • If you tend to procrastinate, Dana K White ("A Slob Comes Clean") has a new book coming out on October 6 that may interest you.

    • I'm not an affiliate, and she's never heard of me. But I love watching her talk about her no-mess decluttering system, and so I've been hearing about this new book, "Procrastinators Get Stuff Done."
    • I pre-ordered the book, which gave me access to recorded 1:1 coaching calls she did with early readers of her new book.
    • Wow! Just listening to those conversations has shifted something in my thought process. I've taken steps that I've literally been avoiding for years because they felt too daunting!
    • So, if you have projects that have been stretching on too long, if you're a perfectionist, or if you have trouble managing clutter, check out her YouTube channel or podcast. And, if you're reading this before Oct 6, it's not too late to get in on the pre-order bonuses!

Thanks for reading!

Eat, Speak, & Think

I've been a medical speech-language pathologist since 2008, and I'm passionate about sharing useful tips and resources to help people living with swallowing, communication, or cognitive challenges.

An older man is holding a glass of water in one hand while covering his mouth with the other hand, coughing. The title of the blog article appears in text to the right of the picture: "A practical way for SLPs to assess cough"

Hi Reader,I love when I come across a new swallow assessment resource that is practical and meaningful. In my new blog post, I share how SLPs can do an auditory-perceptual cough assessment, what to listen for, and how this can translate into clinical decision making. The new handout is a cheat sheet for SLPs, organized to make it easy to find relevant information at a glance. Feel free to share it with your colleagues! I recently learned about the SPEAK Project - a project that is taking real...

Hi Reader,I'm so excited to be sharing this patient success story! My patient "James" was barely talking when I met him, due to aphasia. I tried my usual therapy methods for the first month and didn't get far. Then I learned about a new aphasia treatment on the Speech Scope podcast and decided to try it, even though it seemed too easy. But it worked! James was telling long stories and cracking jokes by the 5th session! You can find the link to his story and learn about the therapy approach in...

Hi Reader,Read to the end to learn something about me that I've never shared before! I've updated the rewards for supporters on Buy Me a Coffee! If you're a supporting member, you should have received the updated PDF of handouts from my blog (now a whopping 360 pages!). Anyone leaving a one-time tip receives the Mini-Binder PDF as their 'thank you'. I updated this PDF with the low-vision font screener test. I'll let you in on a secret.
