🍽️EST Updates: Swallowing in COPD, meal-prepping dysphagia diets, & more!

Hi Reader,

We have a winner for the Medbridge giveaway! Thank you so much for those of you who participated!

We had 27 entries this time around. No new subscribers, but I don't care about that. I just didn't want the free 12-month extension to go unused!

Guys, making YouTube videos is not easy. At least, not when you're learning how to do it!

I got all set up to record a new video yesterday, reviewing a dysphagia straw. But then I decided to really stress-test it, and I ran into some issues. So I reached out to the company for feedback. Hopefully, they will have solutions to the problems I found.

Just fyi, I'll send out newsletters on December 8 and December 22 instead of the usual first and third Mondays of the month.

🙌 Under "Diverse Voices," you'll hear the story of a 17-year-old young man who took on the medical costs of another patient who couldn't afford to stay in rehab.

🍽️ Under "Interesting, Useful, or Fun," you'll find:

  • Concrete tips for the ethical use of AI in healthcare.
  • Dysphagia meal-prepping, recipes, and where to find shaped, pureed foods in variety packs.
  • Sale on attractive adaptive clothing.

Feel free to reply to this email with any suggestions or comments!

Podcasat conversation! Hal Hargrave was paralyzed after a car accident at age 17. While doing in-patient rehab, he met another patient who couldn't afford to stay in rehab. He went to the front desk to say he would pay for that patient. Then he had to figure out how to do it!

(1) Any healthcare provider who uses AI should
read this review from The Informed SLP! They provide excellent recommendations for the ethical use of AI in clinical practice. Their download is fantastic. (This is open-access to everyone.)

(2) Holiday meals are around the corner. Here are some resources that may be helpful to you or your clients: tips for
meal-prepping dysphagia diets, recipes like this pureed loaded baked potato soup, and option to buy a variety pack of shaped pureed meats, fruits, veggies, or breakfast items.

(3) Silverts
sells adaptive clothing and footwear that look attractive. They have an early access Black Friday sale going on, save up to 50% sitewide. I don't have any affiliation. I learned about this site from Brooke Eby's Instagram videos - she has ALS and designs clothing.

Hi Reader,My company doesn't want us to say "patient tolerated" anymore. They want specificity. So I worked with Chat GPT to come up with a bunch of other ways to report how the patient did. I organized it by what we actually mean by "tolerated" since that term can cover a lot! You can find the link to the bonus handout below. 🧠What I'm working on I'm nearly finished with the SLP SOAP note guide. The draft version has really helped improve clarity in my own documentation, and the final...

Hi Reader,I spent an hour or so coming up with a font-size screener for people with low vision. I'm sharing it with you, in case you find it helpful. You can learn how I'm using it in the "Featured post & handout" section below. 🧠What I'm working on First, I'm working on a comprehensive cheat sheet for writing high-value but succinct SOAP notes. (Brevity is a challenge for me, as anyone who has read my blog posts in the past couple of years may guess!) The cheat sheet has been really helpful...

Hi Reader, My current work-related projected is improving my documentation. Currently, I feel like I include too much information and repeat myself too much. So, I spent several hours last week doing research and making a draft cheat sheet. It's helping! Once I've made adjustments and make it easier to scan, I'll share it with you. 🧠What I'm working on With over 130 free PDF downloads, even I forget what I have! I'm working on publishing a spiral-bound book to sell for a modest profit. Here...
