🍽️ EST Updates: 13 risks of eating a modified diet

Hi Reader,

It turns out that there are many risks of eating a modified diet, and that SLPs don't necessarily know about them. I wrote this article in the spirit of Maya Angelou's famous quote, which I'll paraphrase: "When we know better, we do better."

πŸ› οΈ Under "Diverse Voices," you'll find a short video showing how disability accommodations often benefit all of us.

πŸ•’ Under "Interesting, Useful, or Fun," you'll find:

- Excellent time management tips.
- Eye-opening discussion about the history of dysphagia treatment.
- A cool wheelchair attachment.

New EST post

Do SLPs know the risks of dysphagia diets? – I based this article on a recent survey of 326 SLPs. The research study asked the SLPs three questions:

  1. Select the risks of modified food textures and thickened liquids from this list of issues.
  2. Answer how often you consider the risks when making dysphagia recommendations.
  3. Answer how often you educate patients/care partners about the risks.

The results aren't great. I share the highlights, as well as the 13 risks that were listed in the paper: 4 for solid food modification and 9 for thickening liquids. There are actually 10 distinct risks, as 3 of the risks are the same for both.
